Herb of The Day (Agnus Castus)

Good Morning, Evening, and Afternoon. I hope you and your families are doing well.
Here today is a beautiful day. Blessed with clean air and the sound of the sea in the wind.

Today is the start of Herb of the day. Herbs are such a blessing from our creator. Today I would like to share about Agnus Castus.

The Agnus Castus has many names.

  • Chaste tree
  • Vitex
  • Chasteberry
  • Abraham’s balm
  • Lilac chaste tree
  • Monk’s pepper

Some History

The dried, ripe fruit has been used in traditional medicine. Its been known and recognized in the works of the Hippocrates (460 AD, Dioscorides (Ad 40) and the Theophrastus (Ad 372).

It has pretty little purple flowers. There are other colors like lavender. Grows in the meditation areas.

Its a tree or shrub about 6-7 meters (18-22 ft). Blooms in summer. Dark brown fruits are the size of peppercorns. They have a peperish aroma and the flavor is collected in autumn.

Herbal Uses

  • Acne
  • Intermentrual bledding
  • urticaria (red rash)
  • all side effects seemed to be mild and resolved without discontinuation of treatment. There was a study done for 170 women with 20mg daily, and others had a placebo. for three menstrual cycles. The side effects were similar in the herb and to those with the placebo.


For Oral (adults)

Fruit : 0.5-1.0g 3x a day (dried crushed fruit) Better to take in smaller dosages

For those taking tablets 20 – 40 mg

Tincuture 1:5(g/ml) 50-70% ethanoal

People who have an allergy to or are hypersenstive to V. Agnus-Castus
People preg. or breastfeeding.
